Pueblo County AJROTC Narrowly Defeats South Effingham NJROTC

Fourth seed Pueblo County AJROTC edged out fifth seed South Effingham NJROTC 1091 to 1072 last week in the National Air Rifle League Invitational Tournament. Pueblo County AJROTC improved their overall record to 7 - 1. Pueblo County AJROTC was led by Hannah Brown who shot a 277. The remaining contributing members were Nathaniel Romero, Vanessa Martinez, Kayla Mihelich, and Jennifer Knox. Pueblo County AJROTC is from Pueblo, CO, and is coached by Arnold Lewis.

Pueblo County AJROTC will advance to the semi-final round this week to take on top seed Selma MCJROTC from Selma, CA. This will be the first meeting between these two teams.

South Effingham NJROTC finishes the season with a 4 - 4 record, which includes a fourth place finish in the NJROTC Champions Division. South Effingham NJROTC was led by Jayce Mock who shot a 278. The remaining contributing members were Lucas Payne, William Blakeney, William Pierson, and Alexander Novack. South Effingham NJROTC is from Guyton, GA, and is coached by Terry Stautberg.

The post-season Invitational Tournament is reserved for some of the top teams in the National Air Rifle Sporter League. Sponsored by the Orion Scoring System, the league is a national team league for high school teams and junior rifle clubs. The league has two parts. An 8 week round-robin regular season that concluded in November. Followed by two single-elimination tournaments, going on now, for the top teams.

In each game the teams compete in what is known as a Three-Position Air Rifle match. The match is modeled after Olympic Rifle competitions but adapted to high school age athletes. Each athlete will shoots 10 shots in three different shooting positions, prone, standing, and kneeling. Each shot is worth a maximum of 10 points. The sum of points scored in the 30 shots is the athlete's total. The team score is comprised of the best four athletes from each team.
